Theories have run amok about the mysterious origins of Supreme Leader Snoke since the debut of The Force Awakens, but not much in the form of answers was given in The Last Jedi.
If you haven't gleaned as much from the title of this article, Snoke is dead. Or so it appears following The Last Jedi, in which Kylo Ren slices Snoke in half with a light saber using only the force. However, some fans have remained skeptical about the Supreme Leader's unusual and untimely death. Some have even expressed suspicions about how unusually easy it was for Kylo Ren to get the best of Snoke... who is allegedly one of the most powerful forces in the galaxy and a master of the dark side.
After his spiel about knowing Kylo Ren's every next move, Snoke is unexpectedly taken out by his insulted apprentice. This alone seems suspicious to fans, especially in the context of Snoke's ability to link the minds of Kylo and Rey from across the galaxy and project himself across vast distances, as seen in The Force Awakens.
So what's up with Kylo just killing Snoke like it was nothing?
Some fans have pointed to Snoke having a master plan, which involves his own death and allowing Kylo Ren to take command of the First Order in his "absence". Through the leadership of an angry, erratic Kylo Ren, some fans believe Snoke may have a trick up his sleeve that will become evident in Episode 9.
If Snoke truly does know Kylo's every move, he surely must have known that Kylo was going to attempt to kill him. In fact, many fans believe Snoke's insults and disrespect were designed to provoke Kylo to do exactly that.
How can Snoke be alive, though? He was sliced in half!
Or was he?
Remember how Luke Skywalker was able to project himself across the galaxy and trick Kylo into having a fake saber fight? Some fans have pointed to this theme of astral projection as the key to Snoke's fake death. Skywalker was able to change his appearance and convince Kylo that he was there in flesh and blood... but he wasn't.
Being a master of the force, many fans believe it was possible for Snoke to not only project himself across the galaxy but to convince both Kylo and Rey that he was physically present by levitating Rey and even making her believe that he was physically touching her. Theoretically, all of these things should be possible with the complete mastery of the force.
If this is true, Kylo Ren will have been fooled twice. Once by Skywalker and again by Snoke.
As for whatever Snoke's master plan might be, no fans really have any solid theories, but that doesn't mean JJ Abrams and Episode 9's writers don't. Or... maybe Snoke really is just dead.
